Innovative Qualitative Research Methods
Audiences Yorkshire is delighted to be working in partnership with the University of Sheffield to explore the ‘arts experience’ and the potential contribution of qualitative research in the arts.
Together with our Associate Consultant, Lisa Baxter, we will be talking to experts in qualitative research from both the arts and commercial sectors as well as highly experienced academics.
The project is being funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and responds to the recent Sir Brian McMaster report ‘Supporting Excellence in the Arts – From Measurement to Judgement’. This report noted ‘that too many organisations are trying to second-guess what their audiences want and are therefore cheating them out of the deepest and most meaningful experiences’ (January 2008). These are challenging words and this project aims to develop a critical understanding of ‘experience’ and the potential contribution of qualitative research in understanding the arts experience and its impact from the perspective of the audience.
Keep an eye on this page and in future Audiences Yorkshire e-bulletins for updates on our progress.

Audiencing Conceptual Art
Audiences Yorkshire has welcomed Sheffield University PhD student Saskia Warren to work with us over the next three years. Oliver Mantell, our Research Manager, will be co-supervising her PhD on ‘Audiencing Conceptual Art’ with Dr Tariq Jazeel and Dr Jessica Dubow from the University of Sheffield’s Geography Department.
This partnership is supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and creates an exciting opportunity for mutual learning. It will enable Audiences Yorkshire to benefit from the academic expertise of the University of Sheffield and the University to benefit from Audiences Yorkshire’s practical understanding of audience development and audience research.
Oliver said ‘we are very pleased to be working with the University of Sheffield and have high hopes for the partnership. We are confident that Saskia and her research will be a valuable addition to our expertise about audiences and we look forward to being able to introduce her to Member organisations in the future’.
